Family and start up. The 3 rules to keep it balanced
I relocated to Dubai in 2012 with my husband and twin daughters.
I quickly found myself spoiled with the vast variety of activities Dubai has to offer. And still, my ambitious nature was constantly urging me to get involved in more activities. I was feeling that Dubai, in a way, was calling me to live my dream.
Being an expatriate that misses the tastes of her home country, I decided to start importing food products from Greece for my family’s consumption. I soon realized that that was what I wanted to get myself involved in.Importing and distributing food products with ingredients derived originally from the Greek Nature, made with love and care for every family and for conscious individuals who focus on healthy diet.
Well, if you are lucky enough to have a supporting husband with entrepreneurial background, then half the work is done.
I have to admit that the beginning was challenging! Even if I had my husband’s experience, yet the idea was mine… and I had to work on it.
Starting up your own business and keeping the balance between your family and your business can be very frustrating. I remember myself working late at nights after everybody had gone to bed up until the next morning when my daughters needed to get ready for school. I had a lot of going back and forth. While time was passing, I was working like a well tuned machine; however there were moments I felt I was breaking down.
Suddenly I realized the obvious! A simple thing that changed my life!! I had to change my way of thinking! About me, my family and my business!!! If you want to find yourself always busy with work it’s so easy, but keeping the balance between your personal needs, family and business demands, and being happy, it needs a lot of effort.
So I developed 3 rules that made my life easier and happier!!
- “Healthy mind in healthy body” Greek saying. Take care of yourself, exercise often and have healthy eating habits. I wake up every day at 5:30 to exercise and meditate. A healthy nutritious breakfast is a must do… Avoid sugary products that give you a temporary energy and after a couple of hours – when the sugar level drops down – you feel mentally and physically exhausted. Try to have breakfast with your family; it’s a simple, nice thing that keeps the family bonded.
- Be Organized. Once you have visualized what exactly you want to do with your business, be prepared that you have to be very punctual and diligent in achieving and keeping the balance between your family and your business.
- I am lucky enough to have a household help, but again a have to plan ahead 2 weeks of family meals. Also, I have to arrange my business meetings in advance to make sure that I will not eliminate my spending time with my family.
- Stay Focused and Positive even when everything goes wrong. Let’s be honest. There are days that I struggle for everything. My daughters pushing my limits, my husband complaining that I overwork myself and my hurt ego wants to scream. We are humans after all. Accept the situation. Do something that will relax you. Ask for help, have a talk with a friend and remember that it is only one day. The next day will be better. Imagine how proud of yourself you are going to be when you achieve your goals, when you finally reach to your destination and stay focus on that.
